At the start of the campaign GMP and the mainstream media were quick to try and construct a narrative that the protesters were trouble makers. To counter this, protesters used alternative media platforms like the live streaming app Bambuser to get their message out to the wider public. The benefit to Bambuser is that the footage isn’t recorded on the device but is stored online and is still accessible if the phone is confiscated. In some respects it was this footage that drew people to the protest out of their anger at what they were seeing. Many hours of this footage was also used by solicitors representing the protestors. GMP tried to counter this by targeting people live streaming, confronting them and switching off the device whilst they questioned them.
